Choice of provisional ball

It is agreed by lots of people that provisional ball saves time for players and increase ball speed. Besides it also has an advantage of gaining you another more choice. However here we shall tell that this idea is totally wrong.

The rules say that you must go back to where you originally hit from and hit another ball. So now you've got to walk all the way back to the tee area and smack another one. This delay will not make the group behind you very happy.

So, before you leave the tee area to look for your ball in the woods, you can (and should) hit a "provisional ball". In the event you do not find the first ball, your provisional ball becomes the one you play. If you do find your original ball, then pick up your provisional ball with no penalty and continue to play your original ball.

If someone finds your original ball before the five minutes are up, are you permitted to ignore it, take the penalty and play the provisional ball anyway?

At the beginning of the 1st round, Tom called for judge. It seemeed something was troubling him.

It was a 3-stroke hole with 172yards. It's not difficult for a player, however Tom teed it into the shrub directly. Tom made a wise decision which he claimed to shot a provisional ball to avoid missing the ball. Provisional ball went very successful and it fell at a good position on green. Then Tom together with his caddie went into the shrub to search for the ball. However it was obvious that the location ball laid was unavailable.

Looking around, Tom was quite troubled since there was hardly a place for him to swing his ping g15 fairway In this case, Tom thought it was safer to shot the provisional ball than original ball, thus he called the judge.

Nevertheless the judge had refused Tom's request firmly and told him what he only was allowed do was to shot the original ball. If he claimed the original ball is unavailable and continued to go back to swing his taylormade burner 2.0 irons, he then had to return to the tee box to have another round.

In all, the provisional ball on the green had nothing to do with him.
