Without Tiger Woods, I won't be watching: A fan's view

When Tiger Woods announced on July 5 that a series of minor leg injuries were forcing him to withdraw from the 2011 British Open at St. George's, golf fans and television executives alike could hardly withhold their disappointment. The fact is, if Tiger isn't playing, people aren't watching.

Here are five reasons why I won't be watching any major that Tiger is not a part of:

1. Tiger is golf's most compelling player

It is hard to dispute that Tiger Woods is the most captivating and intriguing modern golfer. He plays with more outward emotion and expressiveness than his contemporaries, bringing personality to a game that is often rigid and stolid. Just as the high-quality of Tiger's golf game has come to dominate his opponents over the last 15 years, so too has his image.

2. Lack of other captivating stars or storylines to take Tiger's place

As an athlete, Tiger's greatness has never been defined through a rivalry with another player. Throughout his career, several players appeared primed to challenge Tiger, most notably Phil Mickleson, but until recent years, Tiger has easily thwarted them all. Despite the recent rise of Rory McIlroy, without Tiger, there is a dearth of captivating players.

3. Tiger's presence is newsworthy

Another testament to the popular interest in Tiger Woods is that despite his recent injuries and lack of victories, he has been in the news more than ever. Over the last year and a half, media mentions of Tiger Woods have been more likely to be about his multiple infidelities and divorce than his golf game. The fact is, Tiger Woods transcends his sport like no other athlete.

4. Tiger's chase of Jack Nicklaus' record

Until his recent injuries, it was a foregone conclusion that Tiger would break Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major wins. However, Tiger is currently stuck at 14, and there are serious doubts that he will even approach Nicklaus' mark. Of course, if Tiger doesn't compete in majors, there is no reason to tune in to watch his assault of Nicklaus' record.

5. Tiger is the reason I first started to watch golf

I, like many other Americans, first began to follow golf when Tiger Woods burst onto the scene. His historic and dominant wins in the 1997 Masters and 2000 U.S. Open transcended golf and sport, and simply became spectacles of greatness. However, without Tiger, a major becomes just another tournament.

In addition to these fans fidelity to Woods, the golf clubs for sale is in the same case with them. Ping K15 Fairway Wood is very hot there because of Woods. The club makes you extremely straight with your fairway woods. This visible technology rotates the club face to a more square impact position, which provides straighter shots.

A huge sports fan, I have been watching golf since Tiger Woods rose to stardom. However, until Tiger returns to competition, I'll concentrate my sports-viewer ship elsewhere.
