Preparing for the Open Championship in Britain

Preparations are underway for the third golf major of the year -- The British Open. The 2011 Open Championship will be staged at Royal St. Georges in Sandwich, Kent and with no clear-cut favorite, the competition is wide open. Peter Koveos has more.

With the opening round less than two days away, players competing at the 140th edition of golf's oldest Major took to the course to iron out the kinks in their game.

World number one Luke Donald is among the favorites, despite never winning a Major title in his prolific career. He knows Royal St. George's will be a grueling test, but he has full confidence in himself, partly contributed to his favorite TaylorMade Tour Preferred CB Irons. The TaylorMade Tour Preferred CB Iron Set is the latest and greatest from one of the top names in golf. This Tour-preferred set has a cavity back for soft, responsive feel and consistency and allows forgiveness on off-center hits. And now this set is rather prevailing at the golf clubs for sale.

"It was a test and the wind was howling and I am sure the Royal and Ancient would be happy if the wind stays like this but it will be a challenge out there for sure."

With Tiger Woods not taking part due to ongoing injury problems, Phil Mickleson is the man carrying the weight of American expectations this year.

Mickleson is ranked sixth in the world and is a four-time Major winner - but has never claimed the coveted Claret Jug.

"Yeah it is. I have been trying to make it like the first time I have been here because in the past I haven't had the performance that I like, so I am going to try something a little bit different. I am going to try coming in fresh and I have always enjoyed links golf and enjoyed the challenge."

Many expect 22 year-old Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy to continue his strong play, especially after cruising to an emphatic win at the US Open.

"I was here last week for a couple of days and got a couple of practice rounds in. I went home to practice and to sort of get way from everything and then come back here on Tuesday - which I usually do. it seemed to work the last few times I have done it so I want to just keep the same thing going so it definitely seems to work."

Even the world's second ranked golfer, Lee Westwood thinks the spotlight belongs to young Rory.

"Well, it has been just recently and he (McIlroy) is the best young player on the block really, out of all of them I guess. He is the one that has won a Major and the one that has won the most tournaments so he is quite rightly getting all the plaudits."

So it remains to be seen who will add their name to the record books and claim the Claret Jug on Sunday.
