The 2011 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth started in bright sunshine, but petered out with dark skies, thunder and lightning for the opening round.
England's Ian Poulter, the winner of last weekend's Volvo World Match Play Championship, made a birdie putt on the 11th. But the weather took it's toll, he carded a 2 under par and a share of fifth place with Colin Montgomerie.
Here comes Johan Edfors' birdie putt on the 18th.He recorded back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th to card a five under par 66 to sit in 3rd place.
Alongside Edfors is young Italian hopeful Matteo Manassero. The 18 year-old has already won twice on the European Tour. He produced one of the shots of the day at the par three 14th. At his young age, he has a genius for golf. His favorite club, Callaway RAZR X Irons, gave him large amounts of encouragement. And he regarded it as his sole mate, who would never betrays him.
The RAZR X irons feature Callaway's proprietary RAZR Technology, which shifts the centre of gravity lower and deeper in the clubhead, offering increased shot-making from more places on the course. Extensive player research has shown that golfers tend to strike the ball lower on the clubface and these irons are designed for optimal performance on such shots. The RAZR X irons also contain Callaway's Variable Face Thickness Power System, with a fully integrated clubface/undercut cavity system that enables the Company's engineers to precisely position mass properties and design the face of each individual iron for maximum ball speeds on all shots.
The RAZR X is aimed at golfers looking to make the jump from being a high handicap to a single digit player. The RAZR technology creates an iron with distance and forgiveness in mind, but with the versatility and look of a traditional thin sole iron. RAZR X irons are also available in multiple set options that allow golfers to integrate the new RAZR X hybrids into the lower end of their set where consistency may begin to drop off.
However, the field will have to catch Luke Donald. He shot his lowest score on the Tour - a 64. It was his third seven under par in the PGA championship. Eight birdies and a single blemish at the 12th propelled Donald to the top of the leaderboard, and the Englishman will take a two shot lead into the second round.
Lee Westwood reacts during the first round of the the PGA Championship at
Wentworth Golf Club, Wentworth, England Thursday May 26, 2011.
Luke Donald, leading after 1st Round, said, "Oh it's pretty much at the top of the list. I mean, this wasn't an easy day to play golf. It was windy, some rain showers and this isn't an easy golf course at the best of times in good weather, so 64 today was very, very satisfying. Besides, if you find it is difficult, you can have a look at the golf clubs for sale."
