Practice Training Area

Where can you practice golf when you cannot get to the golf course?

Set up an indoor golf practice training area in your living room, office or study.

Practice putting using a cup or a purchased setup on an artificial golf mat or green.

Set up an outdoor putting green in your backyard or any open field.

Where else can you set up a golf practice training area?

  • Backyard
  • School grounds, e.g. football field, track field
  • Any open field
  • Any large room in the house
  • Basement
  • Hotel hallway
  • Factory
  • Warehouse

The backyard should be at least twenty yards wide. One large stepping stride equals one yard. In this setting you may want to work your 9 irons, pitching wedge and sand wedge. The other advantage of working in a small area is the time it takes to pick up your practice golf balls.

Set up an almost golf course or outdoor putting green for practicing:

  1. Place an exercise mat to act as a reminder that you need to do warm up exercises before starting to play.
  2. Make this area fun by setting up landmarks of trees, garden ornaments, and flower pots.
  3. Set up a sandbox as a bunker and practice with your sand wedge.
  4. Let your imagination look at household items as contributing to your backyard golf range. Use these targets for your putting practice.
  5. When putting work on distance and speed. The ability to judge these two conditions is as critical as dropping the ball into the hole.
  6. Place netting at the rear of the backyard to capture golf balls from putting practice.
  7. Set your targets from 10 and 15 yard chip shots. Catch the golf ball with trash lids, picnic plates, large plastic cups, plant liners, or purchase golf setups for these types of drills.
  8. Set up a small table and a couple of chairs. Sit down and have a refreshing drink of iced tea or lemonade after a practice session. It will almost be like stopping at the clubhouse after a game.

I owe you an apology. You will need to solve the clean-up problem. Clean-up is unnecessary if you practice in an open field, the football field or the track. Divots will not be noticed.

Practice golf balls are easy to obtain. You can purchase used balls very cheap. These are balls which were hit into lakes and ponds. Practice range balls are also available.

After practicing and you feel ready to play a game of golf you may want to try an executive golf course also known as a 3 par course. This will give you experiences with short holes before attempting the standard golf course.

Select playing a 9 or 18 holes of golf and enjoy the clubhouse after the game. The difference between this golf course and the standard golf course is no par 4 and no par 5.

You probably found it worth the time and effort to set up your indoor golf practice or your outdoor putting green in the backyard or wherever before playing on the executive or the standard golf courses.
