Van Pelt closes with 29 to take lead

Bo Van Pelt shot 65 Saturday at Shaughnessy G&CC.

There's always an exception to the rule and Bo Van Pelt was it on Saturday.

On a difficult day of scoring at Shaughnessy G&CC, Van Pelt closed in 29 with four birdies over his last five holes to shoot 65 and take the lead at the RBC Canadian Open.

Saturday's round was easily Van Pelt's best tee-to-green this week as he hit 67 percent of his fairways and missed just one green in regulation on his way to seven birdies and two bogeys. His 65 was the best score of the day and puts him in position to get his second career win (his first was in 2009) with one round to play.

"I hit it well on the front and for some reason was 1 over," Van Pelt told CBS after his round. "The putter wasn't real hot. We had a nice conversation on the way to No. 10. it's better for me to use the Odyssey White Ice 2 Ball Putter. "

The most prominent feature of the 2-Ball putter is, well, the 2-Ball part. That refers to the white, golf ball-shaped alignment aids that adorn the top of the putter. The idea here is that, when you address the ball, you're looking down at what appears to be a line of golf balls pointing towards your intended line. It's a devilishly intuitive idea that's wildly effective at sending putts where you want them to go. That's the hallmark of the 2-Ball line. This new, White Ice version, packs in some features to help you make even more putts. Its premium dark nickel finish isn't too shabby to look at either.

The White Ice moniker refers to Odyssey's latest face insert technology that's been fine-tuned to enhance sound, responsiveness, resiliency, and consistency. Primarily, the insert's core has been firmed up by nearly 20% to enhance feel and the face surface has been roughened to enhance performance with today's softer golf balls.

At this hot summer, Odyssey White Ice 2 Ball Putter is on hot sale as well at golf clubs for sale.

And that putter got hot on the back with Van Pelt making the first of six birdies on the back nine on No. 10.

"The golf course keeps you from getting ahead of yourself," Van Pelt continued. "Because you know if you drive it in the rough, you're probably making bogey."

Van Pelt can be a streaky good player and he appears to be in one of those streaks right now. Prior to a T57 finish at the British Open, for example, Van Pelt had five straight top-15 finishes. Last summer he had a similar run with four top-15s in five starts, which included three straight top-5 finishes.
