Who needs Tiger? Certainly not professional golf! Why?

The oldest player in this quintet is Donald, who will turn 34 in December. All have won at least one tournament this year with the exception of Johnson, who has four career victories, including two last season. Rory McIlroy has one, but it was a biggie -- last week's U.S. Open, where he obliterated the field at Congressional in Tiger-like fashion. The 22 year old fromNorthern Irelandposted four rounds in the 60s en route to a 16-under par 268 -- a record a U.S. Open -- and an 8-shot margin of victory.

Not only that, but McIlroy took a 4-shot lead into the final round at this year's Masters Tournament and seemed destined to record his first Major win.

In many ways, it's probably in better shape without Tiger.

At least, fans won't have to cover impressionable ears with these new players like they did when Woods launched into an expletive-filled tirade when a drive went astray.

The bigger question is ... why aren't fans rallying behind the current crop of youngsters like they did when Tiger burst onto the professional scene in 1997?

Judging from the television ratings for last week's final round of the U.S. Open, Tiger remains a coveted commodity. Sans Tiger -- this year's ratings were 26 percent lower than a year ago, when Woods finished three shots off the pace.

Not even McIlroy's record-setting performance could muster comparable ratings to the 2010 tournament.

That's a shame. It's a shame that so many talented young players can't get the same recognition in victory that Tiger gets with a game that's falling apart. In defeat -- and to some extent, in shame -- Woods seems to be a more desirable attraction for golf fans.

Personally, I'd rather watch the future of the sport than a former great whose fall from grace was due largely to his indiscretions.
