British golfing sensation Rory McIlroy has paid tribute to his childhood sweetheart – saying she helps him cope with the ­pressures of global stardom.

They split briefly last year but got back together earlier this year.

Rory added: "She's obviously my girlfriend but she's also become my best friend over the past few years. I can say things to her that I wouldn't be able to say to anyone else."

Holly did not go to the US Open because, after watching him throw away victory on the last day of the US Masters in April, she feared she would put him off.

But she led the cheers on Twitter last Sunday after he won the Open with the lowest four-day score in its 116-year history.

Holly, a sports technology student and a cheerleader for Ulster Rugby Club, tweeted: "My fabulous boyfriend has played ­flawlessly all week! Drink up ­Northern Ireland, he's done us proud! Champagne flowing... Sooo happy for the curly one!"

Rory – an ambassador for children's charity Unicef – has revealed how he would stay up until the early hours of the morning on his trips to the US so he could phone Holly back in Northern Ireland before she went off to her studies after breakfast.
