Golf is so much more than just a simple game. Sure, technique comes into it but there's so much more. It's often way too easy to allow other things to get inbetween you, the ball and the tiny hole hundreds of yards away. Which is why the right mindset is an essential part of playing golf.

At its simplest level, meditation helps you to relax. In turn, this will affect the way you play your next round of golf. If you've ever noticed that you play a better game when you aren't concerned about the outcome, that's the same thing. You were more relaxed for that game. Maybe because you were in a more relaxed "place" in your mind before you teed off. Maybe because that particular round wasn't as competitive as some of the other games you play. Maybe even because you were concentrating more on the conversations with the other players than you were on the game itself and you - literally - got in the swing.

Whatever the reason for that happening, the good news is that you can get to that place more often with the use of meditation.

One of the most beneficial techniques to learn for golf is a breathing meditation. This is simple to carry out and can be used literally anywhere. So just before that vital stroke you can take a couple of deep breaths and return to the nice, relaxing, meditative state that you've practised over and over again before the game.

But setting aside 30 or 60 minutes a few times a week will have a profoundly positive effect on the way you approach life in general and golf in particular.

Whether you choose a specialized meditation for golf or a general meditation for beginners matters less than actually taking the leap and starting to meditate on a regular basis.
