HSBC Champions ticket prices reduced in Shanghai

Get on par with ticket sales to this year's World Golf Championships (WGC)-HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai. Sponsored by HSBC, this is the first year the event has been elevated to a WGC event.

To commemorate the upgrading of the event, the organizers have unveiled a raft of discount tickets including the golf clubs for sale aimed at opening up the four-day competition to a wider audience. The first 800 applicants for family passes will enjoy a 50 percent discount on the standard price.

To encourage golf as a family sport, each family pass admits two adults and juniors under 18 years old. Additionally, students with full-time student ID can purchase student passes at a special 100 yuan rate for a single entry on Nov 4, 5, or 6. Students who attend the tournament on any weekday and wish to visit again on the weekend can register at the ticket booth and purchase a voucher for weekend entry at the same 100 yuan rate. On the golf clubs for sale, Odyssey White Ice 2 Ball Putter, especially designed for young golfer, is on hot sale these days. The most prominent feature of the 2-Ball putter is, well, the 2-Ball part. That refers to the white, golf ball-shaped alignment aids that adorn the top of the putter. The idea here is that, when you address the ball, you're looking down at what appears to be a line of golf balls pointing towards your intended line. It's a devilishly intuitive idea that's wildly effective at sending putts where you want them to go. That's the hallmark of the 2-Ball line. Its premium dark nickel finish isn't too shabby to look at either.

In addition to these discounts, the organizers are offering the following early-bird specials (excluding student passes) - the earlier the tickets are bought, the more heavily discounted they will be.

Until July 20: first 800 family passes receive 50 percent discount

Until Aug 31: 15 percent off every purchase (excluding student passes)

Ever since the 2005 inaugural event, the HSBC Champions have been regarded as "Asia's Major", a recognition of both the caliber of the players taking part and the quality of the tournament facilities. Its accession to WGC status has been widely welcomed as a sign of the growing popularity of golf in Asia. The series of ticket incentives and discounts on offer from the organizers is both a celebration of this milestone and a bid to attract more junior spectators - the golfers of the future.

This year's event will take place at the Shanghai Sheshan International Golf Club from Nov 5 to 8 and will see it established as the only WGC tournament to be held outside the US. With an increase in prize money from $5 million to $7 million, the WGC-HSBC Champions will bring more of the world's best players to China. No 1 Tiger Woods and defending champion Sergio Garcia have already confirmed their participation in this year's event.
