The Different Components of a Golf Course

If you are new to the game of golf, talking to people about playing can be confusing.  There are many specific golf terms that are associated with different parts of the golf courses in Portland.  If you are looking to get involved in golf, you will want to make sure that you are familiar with all of the terms that are associated with the different parts of the course and the rules.  
The first part of any of the golf courses in Portland that you will come in contact with is the tee box.  The tee box is the first part of each hole where you take your first hit.  On this part of the course you are allowed to use a tee to put your ball a few inches above the ground.  You will notice that there are several colored markers on each tee box.  These different colors indicate where certain groups of players tee off.  Red indicates the women's tee. White indicate beginning men's and a variety of other colors show where professionals will tee off.  One specific thing that you should know about the tee box is that you need to have your ball placed even or behind the colored markers where you will be teeing off.  If you tee off from in front of the markers, you will get a stroke penalty.  People typically use a club called a driver from the tee box if the hole is a par 4 or a par 5.  
The next area that you will visit is the fairway.  The fairway of golf courses in Portland is an area where the grass is cut short.  Short grass makes it much easier to hit a ball and it will not slow your club down when you come through the grass, making your ball go faster and further.  You will want to try to stay on the fairway, as it is the easiest to play from.  
The last part of the hole that you need to know about is the green.  The green is the "target" of every hole on the golf courses in Portland.  Every green will have a hole that serves as the ending point for every hole you will play.  The number of strokes that you take on each hole will be from when you tee off on the tee box to when you finally get the ball into the hole on the green.  These are a few of the terms that you will need to know, but there are many other words that you will need to become familiar with before you hit the golf courses Portland.
